Sarabi and her son, Simba, walked out of their den, the former dolling hard yawns while the latter beamed youthful energy. Shaded hues of purple and blue coated the pre-dawn sky. A gentle breeze, straight from the mountains, rustled the long Savannah grass. And the two early lions took it all in, sitting on the top of Priderock’s perch. “Come on, Mom,” Simba eventually said, “we have work to do!” Sarabi made a face, careening sheer disbelief. Her son never desired hard work. In fact, he avoided it altogether, a scavenger shunning tough kills. You should cut down on all this working, yourself. Her thoughts carried on. Hunting, patrolling, fighting, and ruling. How much time have you spent as a mother? Such feelings weighted the queen’s mood. As she followed her son down some rocky steps, she observed his golden pelt strutting its deep color, the length his tail had grown out, and how his every other feature embraced a new, defined life. Her son was growing up, faster than she
